(Matthew 5:3 NLT) “God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.

(Matthew 9:9 NLT) As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at his tax collector’s booth. “Follow me and be my disciple,” Jesus said to him. So Matthew got up and followed him.

√ Matthew was ASKED.

√ Matthew changed NOTHING.

(Philippians 3:8-9 NLT) Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ
and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith. skip to vs12

(Philippians 3:12 NLT) I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me.

(Matthew 9:10 NLT) Later, Matthew invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners. (ONE VERSION SAYS JESUS RECLINED AT THE TABLE.)

√ Realized if He WANTS me, then HE WANTS THEM.

(Matthew 9:11-13 NLT) But when the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with such scum?” {notice they didn’t ask Jesus}  When Jesus heard this, he said, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor–sick people do.”Then he added, “Now go and learn the meaning of this Scripture: ‘I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.’ For I have come to call not those who think {people who think they don’t need a SAVIOR} they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.”

At this dinner

–> Matthew at best we could say newly saved, NEW TO THIS WHOLE CHURCH THING.

–>Tax collectors & “other sinners” ** one version i read said “SOCIETAL OUTCASTS”

–> 7-8 disciples — best i can tell based on who Jesus had already asked.

–> Pharisees — where probably the kind of people who crashed the party and invited themselves in. who felt they were righteous and holy and needed no savior.

–> Jesus — who is the only one who was perfect

(Luke 9:23 NLT) Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross daily, and follow me.

√ CROWD: Come and SEE.

√ CONGREGATION: Come and JOIN US.

√ COMMITTED: Come and GROW.

√ CORE: Come and SERVE.

√ COMMISSIONED: Come and DIE
